Are Dracaena Indoor or Outdoor Plants?

Dracaena is a diverse genus of plants that are popularly used for their ornamental value, hardiness and longevity. Native to tropical Africa, Madagascar, and the Arabian Peninsula, Dracaena species are widely grown as houseplants due to their low maintenance requirements.

Dracaenas come in a variety of sizes, colors, shapes and textures. Some popular varieties include Dracaena marginata (the ‘Dragon Tree’), Dracaena fragrans (the ‘Corn Plant’), Dracaena surculosa (the ‘Ginger Plant’) and Dracaena sanderiana (the ‘Lucky Bamboo’).

Dracaenas prefer bright light but they can also tolerate low light levels if kept away from direct sunlight. They require regular watering but not too much as they can easily suffer from root rot if they are overwatered.

Since they are native to tropical regions, they do not tolerate cold temperatures below 10°C (50°F).

So, Are Dracaenas Indoor or Outdoor Plants?

Dracaenas are primarily grown indoors as houseplants since most varieties cannot tolerate cold temperatures. However, some hardy varieties such as Dracaena marginata can survive outdoors year round in warm climates with little to no frost.

Conclusion:

Dracaenas are mostly grown indoors as houseplants since most varieties cannot tolerate cold temperatures. However, certain hardy varieties such as the Dragon Tree may be able to survive outdoors year round in warm climates with little to no frost.
