Can You Wear Leggings for Hiking?

Leggings for hiking? This has been a controversial topic for some time now. On one hand, leggings can be the perfect lightweight layer for protecting your legs from bugs and the sun while on the trail. On the other hand, leggings offer little to no protection from thorns and sharp rocks that you may encounter while out in nature.

So, can you wear leggings for hiking?

The answer is: it depends. If you’re planning on taking a short hike over flat ground, then wearing leggings could be a good option. But, if you’re planning on tackling more rugged terrain or longer distances, then it’s best to opt for a pair of hiking pants or shorts with built-in protection against abrasions and punctures. Leggings simply don’t offer enough coverage or protection when out in nature.

That being said, there are still some advantages to wearing leggings on your hikes:

  • They’re lightweight and breathable: Leggings are made from lightweight fabrics that allow your legs to breathe and won’t add extra weight to your pack.
  • They keep you warm: Leggings can provide an extra layer of warmth in cooler climates.
  • They dry quickly: If you get caught in a downpour or decide to take a dip in a lake, leggings will dry much faster than pants.
  • They provide sun protection: Leggings with SPF material can help protect your legs from harmful UV rays.

When deciding whether or not to wear leggings on your next hike, it’s important to consider the following factors:
