How Do You Hardwire Outdoor Lights?

Outdoor lighting is an important part of any home’s exterior design, not just for aesthetics but also for safety. Outfitting your outdoor space with lights that can be hardwired into your home’s electrical system allows you to take full control of your lighting design, as well as enjoy energy savings and convenience. Here are the steps involved in hardwiring outdoor lights.

Step 1: Gather the Necessary Supplies

Before you begin the hardwiring process, you’ll need to gather all the necessary supplies. This includes the light fixtures and mounting units, wire nuts, electrical boxes, junction boxes, electrical tape, wire cutters/strippers, and conduit (if needed).

Step 2: Turn Off Power to Your Home

Before beginning any wiring project, it’s essential that you turn off all power to your home by flipping the main power switch or circuit breaker. This will ensure that you don’t get shocked while working.

Step 3: Install Electrical Boxes and Fixtures

Next, install your electrical boxes where necessary and mount your light fixtures. Make sure to mount them securely so they won’t move when exposed to wind or rain.

Step 4: Connect Wiring

Once your boxes and fixtures are in place, it’s time to start connecting wiring.

Connect each fixture separately using the appropriate wire nuts for secure connections.

Step 5: Test Your Lights

When all of the connections are made and all wires are securely connected with wire nuts, turn on the power again at the main switch or circuit breaker. Then test each light fixture individually to make sure they work properly.
