Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) is a popular destination for hikers in Minnesota. This 1 million-acre area offers over 1,500 miles of canoe routes and hundreds of hiking trails ranging from easy day trips through remote backcountry terrain. Hikers can explore meandering streams, scenic vistas and some of the oldest rock formations in North America.
Minnesota State Parks
Minnesota’s state parks are another great option for hikers looking to explore the great outdoors. There are 75 different state parks located throughout Minnesota, most with their own set of trails suitable for all skill levels. These trails offer a variety of scenery including prairies, wetlands, forests and lakeshores.
Aside from the BWCAW and state parks there are also many regional trails that offer incredible views and unique experiences throughout Minnesota. Popular regional trail networks include the Root River Trail in southeastern Minnesota which follows an old railroad line through scenic bluffs and valleys; the Sakatah Singing Hills State Trail near Mankato which follows an old railroad line through wetlands; and many more!
