How Many Hiking Trails Are in Puerto Rico?

Puerto Rico is an ideal destination for hikers, with its diverse terrain and lush tropical forests. With over 200 miles of trails, it offers something for both novice and experienced hikers. From easy, family-friendly hikes to challenging multi-day treks, Puerto Rico has something to offer everyone.

The El Yunque National Forest is the most popular hiking destination in Puerto Rico. It is the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System and boasts over 28,000 acres of beautiful terrain.

From short day hikes to long distance trails, El Yunque has it all. Popular trails include La Mina Falls Trail, La Coca Falls Trail and Big Tree Trail.

The Caribbean National Forest, also known as El Bosque Estatal de Carite, is located in the center of Puerto Rico and is home to some of the island’s most breathtaking views. The forest offers more than 30 miles of trails that range from easy to difficult and can take anywhere from one hour to multiple days to complete. Popular trails include Toro Negro Trail, Pico del Este Trail and Maricao Peak Trail.

The Guanica Dry Forest is a unique ecosystem found in southwest Puerto Rico that features cactus-like trees and a vast array of wildlife. With its dry climate, it is perfect for a leisurely day hike or a multi-day trek through the jungle. Popular trails include Alturas de Guanaica Trail, La Parguera Trail and Castañer Trails.

Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve in Fajardo is another great hiking destination with its stunning coastline views and secluded beaches. Hikers can explore the reserve’s mangrove forests on foot or by kayak along with its numerous trails ranging from easy to difficult difficulty levels. Popular trails include Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Trails and Las Cabezas de San Juan Beach Trails.

In addition to these four main hiking destinations, Puerto Rico also has several other parks that offer excellent hiking opportunities such as El Portal Rainforest in Adjuntas, Bosque Estatal De Cambalache near Arecibo and Rio Abajo State Forest near Bayamon just to name a few.
