Is Whistler the Biggest Ski Resort in the World?

Whistler, located in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, Canada is one of the world’s largest ski resorts. It boasts two mountains, Whistler and Blackcomb, which offer over 200 marked runs, 16 alpine bowls, three glaciers and plenty of gladed terrain to explore. With an impressive vertical drop of 1,609 metres (5,280 ft) it’s no wonder why Whistler receives an average annual snowfall of 11.3 metres (37 ft).

Whistler is well known for its high-quality terrain parks and super pipe. It also has some great off-piste skiing and snowboarding opportunities that attract serious freeriders from around the world. With a variety of lift systems including the Peak 2 Peak Gondola – a record breaking 4.4 km (2.73 miles) long aerial tramway that connects both mountains – it’s easy to get around Whistler quickly and access its vast terrain.

Whistler is also home to a wide range of activities for everyone from families to adventure seekers. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and other amenities to enjoy either on or off the slopes. Its vibrant nightlife is renowned amongst skiers and snowboarders alike.

So Is Whistler the Biggest Ski Resort in the World?

Whistler may be one of the biggest ski resorts in the world but there are still bigger ones out there. In terms of size alone, Niseko United in Japan has more pistes than Whistler with over 1,308 hectares (3,252 acres) compared to its 817 hectares (2,019 acres). However when it comes to facilities available on-site — such as accommodation options — Whistler certainly takes the crown.

Overall it can be said that while not necessarily being ‘the’ biggest ski resort in the world by size or number of runs; Whistler is certainly one of the most well-known and popular ski resorts due to its outstanding terrain and facilities.
